Chapter 4 -" The past memories & the proposal".

The warm breeze of Lucknow brushed against Haris Hilal Aziz Khan as he stepped out of the airport. Five years... yet the scent of the city, the chaos, the familiar sky - everything felt the same. A strange heaviness settled in his chest, the kind that only old memories can bring.

As he walked toward the exit, he saw her -
Humaira Aziz Khan, standing with teary eyes and a trembling smile.

"Haris... beta."
He didn't realize how much he missed her until she wrapped him in a tight embrace. She whispered a silent dua against his shoulder, the kind only mothers know how to make.

Home.
After five long years, he was home.
At the Aziz Mansion
The moment he entered, the house felt alive again.

Photographs, the same wooden furniture, even the soft fragrance of sandalwood - nothing had changed.
And maybe... he didn't want it to.
Dinner that night was warm and full of laughter.

Humaira kept putting extra food on his plate.

Hilal Aziz Khan, usually strict, kept sneaking soft smiles at his eldest son.
Ejaz and Inaya teased him like old times.

For a moment, the broken pieces inside Haris felt stitched together.
But the peace didn't last long.

The Proposal
After dinner, his father called him to the study.

"Haris," Hilal Aziz began slowly, "you've spent your life working... building a name for yourself. But life is not meant to be lived alone."

Haris stiffened, sensing where the conversation was going.
"There is a girl," his father continued gently.

"Hazel Faisal Ahmed Khan. A good girl. Religious. Sweet. Her family is respectable. Your mother and I... we think she would be good for you."
Haris looked away.

He knew they meant well.
But marriage?
He wasn't ready.
He wasn't looking.

And he definitely wasn't interested.
More than that -
he still carried the wound of the past.
A girl he once trusted.

A confession he once made.

And the betrayal that followed.

He swallowed, voice stiff.

"Baba... I'm not interested in marriage yet. My work-"

"This is not pressure," Hilal said calmly.
"But yes... this is family. And family has hopes too."

And Haris knew
when a father says "not pressure,"
it always means pressure.

Fajr Time

The next morning, just before sunrise, Haris, Hilal, and Ejaz walked home from the masjid after Fajr salah. Mist floated above the quiet streets.

Hilal spoke softly, "Pray istikhara, beta. Only Allah guides hearts."
Ejaz, hands shoved in his pockets, finally looked at his brother.

"Bhai... you're not saying yes. But you're not saying no either."

Haris sighed, his voice low.
"Ejaz... you know what happened in the past."

Ejaz's playful face softened.
Everyone thought he was mischievous and loud -

But Haris knew
his younger brother carried more wisdom than he showed.

"She hurt you," Ejaz whispered.
"But not every girl is her."

Haris closed his eyes.
He wished forgetting was that easy.
From a distance, Inaya had heard everything.

She quietly whispered, "Allah guide you, Haris bhai," and walked away.

And Haris stood there -
caught between his past
and the life his family wanted for him
